Spring Cleaning for your Northern Virginia Home

Spring is officially in bloom and while this year we are experiencing a different type of spring, cleaning is essential to our livelihood, health, and wellness. There are many areas of our home that we often neglect to clean due to our time constraints.

Now is the perfect time to get started on spring cleaning tasks and get the whole family involved. The first part of any cleaning task is to organize and get rid of any items you no longer need.

      Drawers

The first part to spring cleaning is organized your drawers. Completely empty all of the drawers. Look through papers or tools, batteries, etc.

Categorize the items you have emptied and put them into drawer organizers. Everything should have a place.

      Cabinets

Look through cabinets in the kitchen, laundry room, the bathroom and other areas in your home and organize those as well.

Arrange your dishes in an organized manner with drinking glasses and cups in one cabinet, dinner plates and salad plates in one cabinet and bowls for another.

This will make putting the dishes from the dishwasher away an easier task. Use the cabinets closest to the dishwasher for your everyday dishes.

      Windows

While it may not be an ideal time to call a window washing company, it is still a good idea to clean your windows from the inside.

Some windows also tilt inwards, so you can clean those as well. If you can reach any window from the outside, take advantage of a sunny day to clean those windows and glass doors.

      Door Mats

Our doormats help us avoid trekking in outside dirt indoors. With the changing seasons and frequent use, they also get very dirty.

Vacuum indoor doormats and wash and air-dry outdoor doormats. You can use a hose and some neutral dish soap to get any dirt and mud out of them.

      Bookshelves

After a long winter and buying more books to add your collection, spring is a good time to clean the bookshelves and organize them.

Take everything down, vacuum and wipe the bookshelves. Donate any old or unused books. Put your entire beloved books in alphabetical order or color-code them.

      Change Filters

You have run the heating unit in your home all winter. Even though, it may not be time to turn on the air conditioning, it is a good time to change the filters in your home.

Not changing the filters affects the air quality in your home. If the filters are dirty, you run the risk of those particles circulating in your home.

Allergies can also get worse with dirty filters.

      Carpets

Spring is a great time to refresh your carpets. Regular vacuuming will help with dust that builds up on the carpet over time.

Sprinkling baking soda and letting it sit will absorb any odor on the carpet. Spot treat any stain with an appropriate carpet cleaner.

If you have a carpet washer, wash all of your carpets to clean any pet mess or odors.
